1910 Vancouver: Joseph Charles Bishop

The City of Vancouver Archives has a magnificent Vasco, a large pastel caricature of Joseph Charles Bishop (1851-1913). As a photo from the same period shows, it is a stunning portrait. Bishop was founding President of the British Columbia Mountaineering Club. British Columbia's Mt Bishop is named after him. He died in 1913 when he fell down a crevasse. The photo was accompanied by the epitaph 'The mountains lured him and held him'. Thanks to folks in BC: Shirley Sutherland, Michael Feller, Kim McCarthy and Kate Russell.

Vasco Loureiro (1882-1918)

Vasco (aka Louis Vasco) was an Australian postcard artist and intinerent caricaturist who travelled widely. His drawings provide a fascinating insight into various aspects of daily life and many are associated with significant historical events. Some of these drawings have survived and are now turning up in different parts of the world.

This blog is being written as part of a research project that will produce both a PhD and an illlustrated biography.

The blog has been created as an experiment in web-based research methodology. There are still some mysteries and a number of gaps in the Vasco story and there will almost certainly be undiscovered Vasco artworks out there somewhere. The hope is that readers of this blog may be able to help fill some of the gaps or uncover 'a Vasco'.
