1908 Indy 500 rehearsal

On 5 March 1908 the Palm Beach Daily News (Florida, USA) reported that Vasco was a passenger in a car that raced a train. The driver of the car was an Australian, Rupert Jiffkins (aka Jeffkins). Jiffkins subsequently raced in the first two Indianapolis 500s and is a significant figure in American and Australian motor racing history.

Vasco Loureiro (1882-1918)

Vasco (aka Louis Vasco) was an Australian postcard artist and intinerent caricaturist who travelled widely. His drawings provide a fascinating insight into various aspects of daily life and many are associated with significant historical events. Some of these drawings have survived and are now turning up in different parts of the world.

This blog is being written as part of a research project that will produce both a PhD and an illlustrated biography.

The blog has been created as an experiment in web-based research methodology. There are still some mysteries and a number of gaps in the Vasco story and there will almost certainly be undiscovered Vasco artworks out there somewhere. The hope is that readers of this blog may be able to help fill some of the gaps or uncover 'a Vasco'.
